At least 339 children have died out of 5. 840 cases of measles reported, since the 40th epidemiological week, in the Lubao health zone, Lomami province.
The chief physician of this health zone, Dr John Kitengie, delivered these figures on Saturday September 30 to Radio Okapi.
He attributed the resurgence of this disease in particular to the elimination of minimum service in hospitals and health centers following the dry strike of nurses.
According to Dr John Kitengie, this situation disrupts the medical care of children sick with measles in this health zone:
“To date, I can reassure you that vaccines are available at the health zone level and even at the provincial level. It was planned that we would be able to respond, unfortunately we have this strike of health professionals as well as administrative staff which has practically paralyzed the situation of this response which should also take place in our health zone.
He believes that it was important for the white coats to organize even a minimum service to try to manage the situation related to the cases of measles which is rampant in the Lubao health zone.
Dr John Kitengie advises health professionals in this area to get back into the right spirit in order to save human lives:
« It is the children who die, it is their children who die if they cannot understand the situation in the area. We had to put water in the wine and organize a minimum service as in other health zones. I believe that in any case, the situation risks being alarming ».
This strike was launched on August 28 to demand that the government fulfill its various promises, including increased bonuses and the mechanization of new units.
