Interpretation, meaning, causes … dreams fascinate. And that goes for both science and a more mystical aspect!
Dreams have no relation to reality
FAKE. Bizarre, strange, disjointed… Some dreams are so far-fetched that it is difficult to find meaning in them. And yet dreams would give a rather faithful replica of reality… “Dreams do not reproduce real life exactly, but reconstruct it differentlyexplains Isabelle Arnulf, neurologist specializing in sleep, in an interview for the Journal of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS)1. It’s here brain plasticity which allows this mixture of experiences to give a new weave. An untold story is then born from the elements of our day, combined with older memories”.
You can’t interpret your own dreams
FAKE. It’s not impossible, but it requires being very honest with yourself ! “Dream following dream, you will know yourself better, and the interpretation will be easier. If you make mistakes in translation, dreams, like a teacher, will teach you how to interpret them better; advising you very precisely”, explains Marielle Laheurte in ‘My dream notebook’. However, sometimes it can be difficult to interpret your own dreams. Dr. Carl Gustav Jung, – a benchmark psychoanalyst – called on his students to help him interpret your dreams. Logical since dreams reveal what is unconscious or what we refuse to see…
Violent dreams are bad
FAKE. 82% of dreams are violent or negative2. Are these premonitions? Should we see this as a bad omen? “In reality, the threatening and violent nature of dreams would be beneficial for us! They prepare us for danger, in that safe place of sleep, to enable us to better face it in real life”explains Dr. Isabelle Arnulf.
Having erotic dreams is not normal
FAKE. Moreover, 80% of men and 70% of women declare having at least 1 or 2 erotic dreams per year. On the other hand, when erotic dreams are recurrent This must raise questions: behind a scenario that repeats itself can hide a message from our unconscious… which is not necessarily linked to our sexuality.
What is the difference between bad dream and nightmare?
The bad dream is a dream associated with negative emotions; it is regarding interpersonal conflicts. The nightmare is a dream that will disturb sleep to the point of waking us up; it is regarding physical attacks, threats, death4 … If both have no reason to worry, the frequency, recurrence or intensity of nightmares can be questionable. Some people have chronic nightmares, we speak of “nightmare disease”; it is actually a characteristic symptom of post-traumatic stress occurring mainly following an attack, acute stress, a traumatic event…
dreams are useless
FAKE. On the contrary. During the night, the dream makes it possible to sort out the emotions of the day to better eliminate negative feelings. Another interest of dreams? They would be absolutely essential to our brain development, and more particularly to the consolidation of our memory. According to Dr. Sophie Schwartz5 from the Sleep and Cognition Neuroimaging Laboratory at the University of Geneva, it has been proven that brain cells that are activated during a motor or cognitive task carried out during the day (for example, learning a piano score ) reactivate spontaneously during our sleep…
