MDG will ban all cod farming in Norway

MDG will ban all cod farming in Norway

The report which came in September, has meant that business policy spokesman for the Green Party Rasmus Hanson has had enough. It shows that the cod farmers are unable to prevent maturation and spawning in cages, and this can have consequences for the wild cod.

– The Minister of Fisheries has slept while the farming industry has pushed forward along the entire coast, clearly with active misinformation. Now the fisheries minister must pull the handbrake, he adds Today’s Business.

Hansson has asked Fisheries Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss (Ap) a written question in the Storting about the matter. She believes that stopping is the wrong way to go, but wants sustainable growth.

– Cod farming has already had several growth phases that have ended in collapse, because the farmers have not had control over disease, the environmental impact or fish welfare. In order to prevent a new phase of growth with subsequent collapse, we are dependent on careful growth while the gaps in knowledge are covered, replies the minister.

Hansson believes that the minister is acting irresponsibly.

– The minister even writes that “spawning in cages should be avoided”, but the cod do not stop spawning in the cages because the fisheries minister asks them to, he tells the newspaper.
