Main conclusions:

The most popular types of video games are first-person shooters, action-adventure games, simulations, multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), and sports games. Video game preferences vary by country. France, for example, loves Pokémon Legends: Arceus, while China prefers Honor of Kings. Emerging trends in the gaming industry include AR and VR games, fitness games, and casino games.

The video game industry has reached a golden age – one in which cutting-edge, futuristic technology mimics a world like no other. These are realistic, innovative and extremely engaging games that are unlike anything anyone has seen before. So, what types of games are popular and which are the most popular among gamers?

MDC’s case study infographic revealed that first-person shooters (FPS) represent the most popular type of video game, followed by action-adventure games, simulations, MOBAs and sports games. At least 66% of gamers, aged 16 to 24, play FPS games.

The most popular video games in 2023 also vary from country to country.

France likes Pokémon Legends: Arceus, China prefers Honor of Kings, while other countries have their favorite games, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Germany), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (UK), Madden NFL (United States), Pikmin 4. (Japan), God of War Ragnarök (Russia), Remnant II (Canada) and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Australia).

The video game industry is also constantly evolving with new trends constantly emerging. Some of the biggest trends include AR and VR, fitness games, and casino games.
