MCM rejects Lula’s proposals to repeat elections or form a coalition government in Venezuela

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was emphatic in her rejection of proposals by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to repeat elections or form a coalition government in Venezuela.

Machado explained that it is not possible to compare the situation in his country with that of other nations where, according to his statements, government officials are not involved in criminal activities.

The opposition leader stressed that in Venezuela the problem is different and more complicated: “This is not the case in Venezuela,” said Machado.

“We must be careful with the examples of coalition governments that are mentioned,” he said, making clear reference to the fundamental differences between the situations in other countries and that of Venezuela.

Referring to the context of Venezuela, Machado said: “Both have been democratic groups not involved in criminal issues and this is not the case.” With this statement, she highlighted the lack of similarity with other examples of coalitions in the world, insisting that the challenges facing her nation are significantly different and, in her opinion, deeper.

In her speech, Machado also touched on the issue of guarantees and safeguards for those currently in power.

“We are willing to provide guarantees and safeguards, we are not going to initiate a process of revenge, quite the opposite,” he said, suggesting the need for a different approach to resolve the Venezuelan political situation. His message was clear: revenge is not what is sought, but rather a change that will allow a peaceful transition without animosity.

Regarding the proposal to repeat the presidential election, Machado said that the opposition had already gone to one election and won.

“If we go to a second (election) and Maduro doesn’t like the result, what do we do, go to a third, and then to a fourth or a fifth? We went to an election with the rules of tyranny despite the criticism of many and we won,” he said.

Regarding the election results, Machado described the situation as a “monumental victory.”
