MCM: Maduro seeks to turn Venezuelans into “enemies of each other”

Opposition leader María Corina Machado said on Tuesday that Nicolás Maduro wants to turn citizens in communities into “enemies of each other” through “informers,” referring to the executive’s channels for reporting those who protest against the official result of the presidential election, which declared the president the winner.

“They want to create barriers (referring to the Government) in our communities with these accusations that seek to artificially turn us into enemies of each other (…). They want to create snitches, informers, who betray their neighbors, the brother with whom they have lived their whole lives (…), but they will not succeed,” said the opposition leader through a video on X.

Machado acknowledged the role of citizen organisation in the elections, in which electoral witnesses gathered “83.5%” of the minutes that – according to the opposition – show the victory of the opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, which the Government dismisses as false documents.

“I invite you to continue overcoming all the obstacles that the regime puts in our way with its terror, so that we remain organized and, now overcoming fear, we can gather again around our comanditos (the political organization groups of the campaign of the largest opposition coalition) and the thousands of citizen organizations,” said Machado.

On Monday, Attorney General Tarek William Saab reported 25 deaths during post-election protests, and said that “all” can “be attributed to criminal groups instrumentalized by the so-called ‘comanditos’,” whom he accuses of generating “violence” and causing material damage.

The government said it had received citizen reports with details about 22 of the 25 deaths reported by the Attorney General’s Office, through a digital application created by the Venezuelan State.

Machado, for his part, warned about “how cruel this regime can be,” and asked citizens to continue communicating and “maintain civic protest.”

“Let’s continue organizing as we have been doing, now with more care, intelligence and determination. This is the way to stop them from robbing us,” said the opposition leader.

On Tuesday, the UN panel of experts that participated in the Venezuelan elections concluded, through a statement, that “the process of managing results by the CNE (National Electoral Council) did not comply with the basic measures of transparency and integrity that are essential for the holding of credible elections,” something that other observers and foreign governments have stated.

At the moment, other delegations, such as the Council of Electoral Experts of Latin America (Ceela) or African organizations, among others, also invited by the CNE, have not made any public statements.
