Opposition leader María Corina Machado and presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia on Thursday rejected the proposal for new elections in Venezuela made by Brazil and Colombia in response to the crisis generated by the questionable re-election of Nicolás Maduro.

“The presidential elections in Venezuela were held on July 28 and were overwhelmingly won by Edmundo González Urrutia,” wrote the candidate himself on his X account.

In a virtual press conference with Chilean and Argentine media, Machado said that “to suggest ignoring what happened on July 28 is, for me, a lack of respect for Venezuelans who have given everything.”

“Popular sovereignty is respected,” Machado continued. “The elections took place and Venezuelan society expressed itself in very adverse conditions where there was fraud and yet we managed to win.”

In another context, Machado said she was “convinced” that part of the Armed Forces, which support President Nicolás Maduro, are willing to negotiate a transition with her group.

“We have been clear” in our position of “open arms” and “no persecution or revenge” for the government supporters, and “this also occurs in the armed forces,” said the leader.

“We would not have been able to access the records if there had not been cooperation from the officers,” he recalled.
