McLaren Formula 1 team has extended the contract of team principal Andrea Stella.

The contract extension comes after McLaren Chief Executive Zak Brown said Stella had made a big impact since taking over at the end of 2022.

Stella led McLaren’s transformation from a mid-table team to a contender for the constructors’ title this season.

McLaren did not reveal the terms of Stella’s new contract but said it was a long-term deal.

Drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri last year extended their contracts with McLaren which will keep them at the Formula 1 team until 2026.

Stella, who joined McLaren from Ferrari in 2015, was appointed team principal in 2022 and immediately oversaw a restructuring of the team which had struggled in recent years.

The 53-year-old Italian’s influence was first seen midway through the 2023 season when McLaren, who were usually in mid-table, were able to keep up with the Red Bull team.

This year, after further updates to the car, Norris took his first win at the Miami GP last May, and has been in contention for the championship in every race.

Piastri also won for the first time at the Hungarian GP last month.

McLaren currently sits just 42 points behind Red Bull in the constructors’ standings with 10 races remaining.

Brown said, “Andrea’s leadership, expertise and respect for the team and Formula 1 make him the right person to take McLaren forward.”

“His influence on McLaren in his role as team principal has been extraordinary, not only on results on the track but also on the development of our culture and way of thinking.”

“With the multi-year contract extensions with Lando, Oscar and now Andrea, we are optimistic that we can become Formula 1 champions,” he continued. (bbc/Z-1)
