Rather measured in commenting on the departure of Jon Rahm on the LIV, the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy split this weekend with a murderous tweet which says a lot regarding the resentment he feels towards his former Ryder Cup teammates having chosen to desert the historic circuits.

« The best thing to happen to the 2023 European Ryder Cup team is the departure of Henrik Stenson to the LIV

It is with these sibylline words that Rory McIlroy sparked a new controversy on X (formerly Twitter). The Northern Irishman responded to the coach and statistician Lou Stagner who challenged him on the social network wondering if Rory also wanted a change in the rules to allow Stenson (implied to all LIV players) to be able to be captain.

A message which followed the declaration of the world number 2, it seems determined to put pressure on the European Tour so that Jon Rahm can appear in the Ryder Cup team in 2025 even following his departure on the LIFE Golf.

The winner’s answer2014 British Open was scathing…

What is hidden behind this seemingly personal attack directed once morest the placid Henrik Stenson ? Rory McIlroy was close to the Scandinavian, as he was with Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood et Sergio Garciabefore these four decided to opt for LIV Golf, creating a real divide between pro and anti dissident circuit.

While tensions have seemed to ease, why reignite the flame of the circuit war? While the merger (and perhaps reconciliation) has become almost obligatory with the departure of Jon Rahm to the Saudi circuit, this exit has revived dissension.

Rory didn’t digest the betrayal

Certainly, the “betrayal” of the Swede, who left for the LIV following accepting the post of captain of Ryder Cup, of which he was subsequently dispossessed, obviously disgusted McIlroy, and not just him. But this tweet from McIlroy came at a bad time and earned him a “good volley of green wood”. Not just from the LIV players, even if the first to be ironic was Ian Poulter.

« Calm down guys, it’s a parody account. Rory McIlroy would never say such a thing. I promise you it’s fake. He’s a classy man and he wouldn’t say that regarding a teammate. »

Over a million views

Except that at the time of writing these lines, this post has been on X for around ten hours and it remains there, on McIlroy’s official account.

It has already been viewed more than 1 million times. And variously appreciated… Lee Westwood, Pablo Larrazabal et Romain Langasque are not the only ones to be surprised!

But what might have happened to the five-time winner of the Race to Dubai?
