McGrath ‘tried’ to ruin my career: Brett Lee

Australian pacer Brett Lee is the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen. Lee has always been a batsman’s nightmare, taking wickets with his toe-crushing yorker.

The Aussies had an array of pace bowlers during Lee’s tenure. Lee, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath and Gillespie were among those who made Aussies ‘The Mighty’ Aussies.

Each of them had their own style of bowling. While Lee’s specialty was aggressive toe-crushing yorkers, McGrath’s method was to bowl calmly and dismiss world-class batsmen.

McGrath and Lee were the brahmins in Ricky Ponting’s quiver.

Both have taken more than 1600 wickets in international cricket. He also had the deadliest fast bowling combination in cricket. The chemistry and friendship between the two was equally famous and interesting.

Now, Brett Lee is telling the story of how McGrath and Gilchrist pranked him. Lee says that the two of them tied his shoelaces together and knocked him down, which would have ended his career.

He says this in a video shared on his YouTube channel.

The incident happened during the Boxing Day Test in 1999. I was sitting with Gilchrist and McGrath. I was young then. Then Gilly said to go to the ground and enjoy some time.

McGrath, who was next to me, tied my shoelaces together. When I was regarding seven to get to the ground, I tied the laces and the whole thing rolled over. It was almost like my Test career was over before it even started,’ Lee said.

Lee says that McGrath is a great man, but occasionally pulls pranks on everyone.

‘McGrath is a very good man. The aggressive attitude seen on the field is not the same off the field. He is a calm person off the field. An ordinary man who likes to relax a lot. But McGrath was also very fond of signing these kinds of jokes.

Off the field, the McGrath Foundation has done a lot for breast cancer patients. Everyone will like him. He’s simultaneously a superstar and a rags-to-riches struggling to understand,’ added Lee.
