After so many companies have already left Russia, a gastronomic enterprise more or less does not fatten the cabbage either. But in this case it’s different, because this group was one of the first Western chains to venture into Eastern Europe: McDonald’s is turning its back on Russia after 32 years.
So the circle closes: “It’s a complicated issue that has never existed before and that has profound consequences,” writes CEO Chris Kempczinski loudly «New York Times». The company announced in March that it would temporarily stop doing business in Europe’s largest country.
“It is impossible to ignore the humanitarian crisis unleashed by the war in Ukraine,” Kempczinski said. “And it’s impossible to present the golden arches with the same hope and promise that brought us to the Russian market 32 years ago.”
The CEO announced that the group would write off 1.2 to 1.4 billion dollars because of “losses on the exchange of foreign currencies”. Unfortunately, it is not known how many of the 39,000 branches worldwide are in Russia.
