In a press release, the American company informs the public and its employees that new utensils will appear.

For environmental reasons, the famous spoon which is also used to mix the toppings with the ice cream will be withdrawn from the market.

The latter will be replaced by a small black spoon which contains less plastic, the multinational announced on Tuesday.

Mixing the confectionery will be done with a reusable spoon that employees will have to clean every four hours.

“This is just one example of how McDonald’s is redesigning some of its most iconic products to eliminate unnecessary waste and adopt more sustainable products,” it says.

The change will take place over the next few days in restaurants located in the United States.

In Canada, customers who order dessert McFlurry should receive a wooden spoon instead of the traditional spoon by the end of 2023, according to McDonald’s Canada.

“Even if this change seems minor, the replacement of the plastic whisk with a wooden spoon and a reusable whisk should allow the elimination of 191 tonnes of single-use plastic per year in the Canadian system,” we can read in a press release published last February.

According to McDonald’s Canada, the change has already been implemented in Montreal branches.
