Fans of the so-called “Schachtelwirtes” have known for a long time that the McDonald’s on Villach’s main square will close at the end of January 2024, we have already reported on it. Two new locations are to open in the Draustadt.
“A door closes…”
“One door closes, but another opens”, this saying can be taken almost literally in this case, as following the closure of the yellow “M’s” on the main square, two new locations are now to be opened in Villach. Only: “We are still looking for a location, so it may take some time before we can open new branches,” explains franchisee Karl Jurak in an interview with 5 Minutes.

This McDonald’s branch will be closing soon
What happens to the employees?
Now the branch on the main square is closing at the end of January, no new restaurants have opened yet, which raises the question of what will happen to the employees from there? “After the closure, we will accommodate all employees in the McDonald’s in Maria Gail. We need more staff there anyway,” says Jurak, answering the question.
Two new locations are being planned
“It would be best to have a McDonald’s in the west of Villach, one in the middle and the location in the east, on Maria-Gailer-Straße,” said the entrepreneur in an interview with 5 Minuten in September. The McDonald’s real estate department is already looking for suitable locations where it makes sense to operate a McDrive. According to Jurak, traffic-calmed zones are therefore more likely to be eliminated. There have already been initial discussions with the city regarding a location in the center of Villach – so the planned new district near the Westbahnhof came into consideration as a possible location. As soon as a location is found, we will inform you.
