Kylian Mbappe showed off his goal-scoring instincts as he won his first title on his debut for Real Madrid on Wednesday night. The French superstar scored in the 68th minute of the UEFA Super Cup match against Europa League champions Atalanta Bergamo, making the final score 2-0 (0-0). Federico Valverde had previously given the Champions League winner the lead in Warsaw without injured Austrian legionnaire David Alaba (59th).

Real Madrid won the Super Cup for the sixth time, becoming the only record winner. The two rivals Barcelona and AC Milan have won the European Champions Cup five times. The Premier League champions have had the upper hand since Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid in 2018.

Carlo Ancelotti is spoiled for choice in attack. “A big problem,” joked the Real Madrid coach. Ruining his vacation wondering who was playing. In the game against Atalanta, Mbappe ran in front, flanked by Brazilians Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo. Jude Bellingham works in the background. David Alaba is still recovering from a torn cruciate ligament in December and his return date has yet to be confirmed. The ÖFB legionnaire watched the game from the bench with his teammates.

After a controllable initial period, Mbappe, who made his debut, scored the first shot, but it was blocked (15th time). Beyond that, Real Madrid struggled to create chances. Atalanta was very defensive at times, but most importantly very disciplined. The Italians almost took the lead. Real defender Eder Militao deflected Marten den Roon’s sharp cross onto his own crossbar (25th). Shortly before halftime, Rodrigo hit the opposite aluminum pole (45th + 1).

Thibaut Courtois made his first standout performance early in the second half. Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic forced the Real Madrid goalkeeper into a brilliant move with his head (47′). There was a level of pressure on the Italians and Real nipped it in the bud with their first goal. The lightning-quick Vinicius Junior breaks down the left flank and Valverde only has to push the ensuing cross over the line.

Shortly after, Vinicius Jr. and Bellingham missed top goals, but the second soon followed. Bellingham served Mbappe in the backcourt, and Mbappe made his debut with a shot into the top corner. In the final stage, Vinicius Junior’s pass was almost deflected into the goal (82′), otherwise Real Madrid left the game to Atalanta. But the Italians are no longer attractive.
