French footballer Kylian Mbappé brought before the French Professional Football League (LFP) and UEFA the dispute that he has been facing for months against Paris Saint Germain (PSG), from which he claims the payment of a bonus and three months of wages for a total of about 55 million gross euros, according to the media The World.

On August 8, Mbappé submitted his complaint to the LFP’s legal committee, citing an article in the Professional Football Charter that stipulates that clubs must pay players by the last day of each month at the latest, the outlet reported in a post on Tuesday, August 20.

This legal commission is competent, when it detects non-payment to a player by a French team, to prohibit any new signing until the situation is regularised.

On August 13, the new Real Madrid star (whose contract with PSG ended in June 2024) sent an email to the French Football Federation asking it to inform UEFA, the reference body in Europe, of the fact.

The letter is specifically addressed to the UEFA commission responsible for granting licenses to clubs competing in European competitions such as the Champions League, as well as verifying that financial rules have been respected, in particular whether payments are up to date.

More details

French teams must prove to the National Directorate of Management Control that they have no delays in payments to their staff in order to obtain the European license.

The dispute began in 2023, when Mbappé informed the French capital team that he did not want to activate the clause to extend his contract beyond June 2024, which sparked speculation about a possible agreement with Real Madrid.

PSG management responded with what everyone interpreted as a punishment by excluding the striker from training with the rest of the players destined to play and relegating him to the group of those who had to leave.

The two sides broke the deadlock after Mbappé conceded that the club would not lose out financially if he left PSG and that he was willing to give up a loyalty bonus to do so.

For the French international, this resignation meant his reintegration into the group, but he believes that since he informed the president of PSG, Nasser Al Khelaïfi, that he would leave the French club in February 2024, he has felt a kind of void and his playing time has been reduced.

Not only has PSG not paid him a third of his bonus (36 million euros), but they have also not paid him the last three months of his salary (April, May and June), which represents a total of 55 million euros.

What the team says

The club is now reaffirming its position that the money is a response to Mbappé’s commitment to resign if his departure were to occur without the new team paying for his signing, which is what has happened with Real Madrid, which had no obligation since the contract with PSG ended in June.

A source close to Al Khelaïfi, quoted by The Worldis optimistic about the progress of the “negotiations”.

“Kylian Mbappé has promised that PSG would be protected if he leaves on a free transfer, and he has done so on several occasions in private and in public,” according to the source, who says PSG do not want to comment on “ongoing discussions that have been ongoing in a constructive manner for many months.”

Mbappé’s career

Mbappé made his professional debut at the age of 16 with AS Monaco, and a year later (2017) he was signed by PSG, with which team he won five Ligue 1 titles, three French Cups and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2020.

He was also recognised as the top scorer in Ligue 1 for five consecutive seasons and as the youngest player to surpass the 150-goal mark in France’s top division.

In 2018, he participated in the World Cup in Russia, which his French team won, and became the youngest player to score in a World Cup final since Pelé in 1958.

He was also voted second best player in the world at The Best FIFA awards in 2022.

On 28 May 2024, Mbappé became one of the Champions League’s top scorers and won the player of the year award at the European edition of the Globe Soccer Awards.

On May 10, Mbappé confirmed on social media that he would not renew his contract with PSG and that he would leave the club at the end of the season. Later, on June 3, Real Madrid confirmed the signing of the Frenchman for five years in a post on X.
