Mazda has been moving towards the premium segment for five years: the debut of an updated sedan was the first step Mazda 6 with a more expensive trim and a turbo engine. And for full-fledged premium models, a new platform has been developed with a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive. The first-born of this architecture will be the Mazda CX-60 crossover, the debut of which appointed on March 8th. In the meantime, there is a general picture of how Mazda is going to work in a new segment.
As told to the publication Coach the head of the British division of the company Jeremy Thomson, Mazda does not intend to compete with the German premium brands. It is pointless to impose competition on them. But the company is confident that the market has a place for the so-called Japanese premium. The main player in this conditional segment remains Lexus, which is represented almost all over the world. It is from him that Mazda intends to grab a piece of the market pie. Of course, there are also Infiniti and Acura, but they are not sold in Europe, so Jeremy Thomson did not mention them.
Thomson considers the quality of cars, design and rich standard equipment to be the main trump cards in the fight for premium buyers. This is where Mazda intends to outperform its Japanese competitors. The company is also developing the electrification of the model range, without which there is nowhere in Europe now. Until the end of 2023, Mazda will introduce five “conventional” hybrids, five plug-in hybrids and three electric vehicles.
