Mayra Couto: Fighting Thyroid Cancer, Finding her Voice, and New Beginnings

2023-12-22 14:38:05

“I am no longer that person who stayed silent. I relate the thyroid cancer I suffered with the fact that she kept quiet regarding many things that I didn’t like. After discovering my voice, I found the right volume because it is not okay to shout either,” she reflects.

On October 31, 2013, the actress was diagnosed with first-degree metastatic thyroid cancer. A month later she underwent successful surgery. Since then, her life and her priorities have never been the same, she says.

“I never felt fatalistic nor was I afraid. It was something that appeared and I had nothing left to do but accept it. She had local metastases in the lymph nodes of her throat. They removed my entire thyroid. When I opened my eyes, the day of the operation, it was like a gift. I saw so much light that I thought I was in heaven. When I saw the nurse, I told her: ‘I survived.’ I might not believe it. God gave me a new chance at life. That’s why I value it much more now,” he agrees.

New projects

These days, away from television, Mayra presents her Christmas show for companies “Where is the sleigh?” She will also install Lima Transmedia in the country, a technological development company that she created in Colombia with her partner.

“After graduating in Cuba, in 2020, as a professional filmmaker and new media producer, we created a technological development company, but applied to the media, social networks, marketing and ; using artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality in processes. In Colombia we work on many things with influencers, social leaders and companies. The idea is to do our extension in Lima,” she details.

Since 2021, Mayra has been living with her Colombian boyfriend in Manizales, but this year she decided to return to Peru. “My partner works there. Now I’m alone here, but the idea is that he comes too. We want to grow together, get married. “I want to have a big party and invite hundreds of people,” she details.

Couto has yet to return to acting on television. He hopes to do it in “At the bottom there is room” if the production requires it and the “viewer asks for it.” “The series was like a school for me. I learned a lot, I grew as an actress. If they want me – even just – for a cameo, I will gladly accept. As long as I can meet my people and my friends once more, everything is fine,” she says.

Controversy

In 2020, the actress recorded the pilot of “My Body My Rules,” a series that won the economic stimulus of 75 thousand soles granted by the Audiovisual Directorate of Phonography and New Media (DAFO) of the Ministry of Culture.

“Ventana Sur called us, they welcomed us into their catalog as a series project. “We are ready for them to buy the series, the idea or the canning,” he highlights following reflecting on the criticism that surrounded this project.

“It was a giant misunderstanding because what they gave me is not a gift. There was no favoritism. I met the jury the day I had to argue my project. I didn’t see him once more followingwards. I don’t know much regarding them either, but they saw in my proposal and in the other 360 or so that won in 2020, that it is sellable and transmits values. If I, as a Ministry, am going to invest in a project, it has to be profitable because it will benefit the country. I don’t want to sound petulant or anything like that, but making an episode of a cinematic-level series is not economical. The money didn’t cover everything. I went into debt, which is good because as a producer I have to contribute. And I accounted for every transaction that was made, with a receipt for fees and perfectly signed invoices. In order for them to give me my certificate, which they are already issuing, I had to spend every last cent they gave me. Maybe all that information is public. “It is on the parties’ table,” he clarifies.

About the inclusive language that proposes the use of ‘all’, ‘todxs’ or ‘tod@s’. These neologisms are not accepted by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), the actress says she understands that there are people who feel uncomfortable with their use, but she considers that it is a deeper issue of empathy.

“I understand that world is world. It was a post I made on Instagram that was super inspiring, metaphorically. Feminists use that word. I didn’t invent it. However, when I said it, they grabbed me with a punching bag. The idea is not to change the planet but to open a path so that they do not continue killing us. The use of E, which I proposed in 2018, is already making waves. And that’s good,” he agrees.

Harassment complaint

In June 2020, Couto became the center of media attention, by denouncing through Instagram the actor Andrés Wiese, his former fictional partner in “Al Fondo Hay Sitio” (Nicolás de las Casas), for alleged sexual harassment. . Action that she took, says the actress, in support of the 17-year-old minor who, at that time, also reported the actor for the same crime. Both accusations, two years later, were filed.

“The most important thing for me, at that moment, was to tell the minor that the actress who works with the person she is denouncing supports her. The fact that he is younger touched very intimate and personal chords with me. We never met, I didn’t know her, but I want her to know that I am with her. In 2016, workplace harassment did not exist. No one can judge a crime that exists today, but did not exist at that time. What he was doing at that moment was not a crime but an inconvenience. And far from meeting a gentleman who assumes his error or foolishness, I ran into a wall. If anyone thinks I’m a liar, let them stay with that. “I am proud of myself and satisfied with my performance,” she highlights following recounting the nightmare she experienced in those days.

“I will never remain silent once more, but if I experienced a situation like that once more, I would have a much more careful strategy. I went out to report without a lawyer, without Internet. I was in Cuba. I only loaded Instagram. That day, as soon as I reported it, a feminist girl wrote to me to let me know that someone was publishing all my information: my address, my phone number, my parents’ names, my financial statements, my bank account number and how much money I had. I started to shake. My parents were terrified. They were afraid that something would be done to them. They threatened me [de muerte]. I closed all my accounts. It was harsh,” she emphasizes.

Finally, the actress spoke out regarding the relationship she had with Junior Silva when she was 17 years old and both were part of the cast of actors in the series ‘Graffiti’. Gabriel Calvo commented that Couto made Silva cry daily.

“I didn’t know he cried every day, if we had known we would have ended it sooner,” he jokes. “[Gabriel] He seems like a good actor to me, maybe I can count on him in a project. As long as you don’t disrespect me, you can say whatever you want. At that time he was a minor, I don’t even remember. He was at school. I was probably crying because we mightn’t see each other,” he says.

Mayra Couto assures that she is in the best moment of her professional and sentimental life. With her work projects that excite her and the revitalizing love of her partner, to whom she attributes much of her joy.

“I always say that I have the perfect life: I am healthy, I laugh every day, I have a partner with whom I talk too much. I feel like we are already a family. What more can I ask for,” she emphasizes.
