“Mayors, yes, we can limit the circulation of gasoline vehicles”: Daniel Quintero | BLU mornings

The mayor of Medellin, Daniel Quintero,
announced that as of 2035 no more gasoline-powered cars will be sold in the city, a drastic change to which he said “you should not be afraid”, since it is part of the global transition to which Colombia has to join. However, the initiative caused a stir in several sectors.

In dialogue with Mañanas Blu, the mayor assured that, although it is not a law or measure of the national government, the mayors of the country can make this type of decision, such as “limiting the circulation of vehicles” in their territories.

“Congress can help, but we mayors have the possibility of limiting the circulation of vehicles in our territory. The measure is not new, it is new for Colombia, but not for the world (…) In the case of Medellin, what we are going to put is a
restriction of circulation to new gasoline vehicles from 2025”, he stressed.

As he mentioned, the estimated time to put the restriction on the sale of this type of car “is educated for the transition” that they want and with “the message seeks to accelerate the processes”, which are were slowed down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is a message not only to the citizens, but also to the unions, of a gradual plan, but strict to eliminate combustion cars in the city (…) There are alternatives to achieve this change”.

Regarding the measure, he clarified that he had not yet discussed it with President Gustavo Petro, but that both “agree” that “the big challenge is to face the climate change crisis that the world is facing.”
