On Thursday evening, Mayor Van de Vijver crashed into a parked car while driving his vehicle. He then contacted the police himself. His alcohol test came back positive, following which his driving license was revoked for 15 days. “I realize I made a big mistake and I want to apologize for that,” Van de Vijver said as he broke the news himself. “A mayor has an exemplary role to play and I did not fulfill that role. No one is above the law. That’s why I notified the police myself and want to communicate transparently regarding it.”
Marc Van de Vijver then claimed that he would bear all the consequences of his actions. “Everyone knows that I like human contact. It’s kind of my trademark and I even think it’s my job as mayor. Sometimes this includes drinking alcohol. But that’s no excuse for driving while drunk. I see this story as a warning. And this warning was clearly received. From now on, I will apply zero tolerance if I have to drive myself. If I can’t, I’ll make sure I have another means of transportation,” he added.
