The mayor of a community Mexico he married an alligator dressed for the occasion. Between applause, dances and even a kiss, the politician complied with a traditional ritual, in order to ask for prosperity and abundance for his people.
The protagonist of this unusual story is Victor Hugo SosaMayor of San Pedro Huamelulaa Chontal indigenous community from the isthmus of Tehuantepecin the south of the state of oaxaca. During the ceremony, Sosa affirmed that he feels affection for his alligator girlfriend, named Alice Adriana which, according to tradition, represents “the princess girl”.
The wedding between a man and a female alligator has been celebrated for more than 230 years, in memory of the union of two ethnic groups of the region, the huaves (settled in the town of Saint Matthew of the Sea) and the chontaleswhich was also sealed with a marriage.
Before the wedding, the alligator princess is baptized and taken to visit the houses of some dance groups in the municipality. In addition, as part of the rite, the animal is taken by its owners to the home of the municipal holder shortly before the union. At that moment, she is dressed in a typical dress of the region and a multi-colored flower headdress.
After the wedding ceremony, the mayor danced with his wife to the rhythm of the traditional music of the town. Finally, the celebration ended with a kiss that sealed the union between the king and the princess.
“I accept the responsibility because we love each other, that’s the important thing, there can’t be a marriage if you don’t love each other. We love each other and I agree to marry the princess girl,” said the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula.
