The financial crisis that the University of Antioquia is going through reached the streets of Medellín this November 14, when hundreds of students went out to march demanding an immediate solution to the lack of resources.
Given this situation, the mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, assured that his administration is committed to looking for alternatives to support the institution.
In a message spread through social networks, the president recognized the importance of public education and expressed his willingness to collaborate, despite the fact that the University of Antioquia is not within the direct powers of the Mayor’s Office of Medellín.

“Although the UdeA is not within the legal responsibilities and powers of the Mayor’s Office according to Law 30, I do believe that we can help in this crisis”indicated Mayor Gutiérrez.
In that sense, he announced that he will hold a meeting with the university rector and students next Monday, November 18, to analyze possible joint solutions.
It is worth remembering that, at the beginning of November, the Government of Antioquia granted a loan of $90 billion pesos to the UdeA to cover part of its salary obligations.
However, the university still requires an additional $46 billion pesos to guarantee its operation.

The accumulated debt of the institution, estimated at $350 billion pesos, is a consequence of a historic definancing of several periods of the National Government in its development plan, where they expanded the quotas for public higher education in the country, without taking into account an increase in funding.
The march on November 14 demonstrates the concern of the students and the university community regarding the serious financial situation facing the University.
It is expected that the meetings between the authorities and student representatives will make it possible to find a way out of this crisis and guarantee the continuity of higher education in Antioquia.
