Preservation of the world cultural heritage is already anchored in Vienna’s building regulations and urban development plan – the decision will be made in the summer
Vienna (OTS/RK) – This followingnoon, Mayor Michael Ludwig received UNESCO World Heritage Director Lazare Eloundou Assomo and other experts in Vienna City Hall.
Ludwig welcomed the high-ranking delegation, thanked them for coming and initially pointed out the special situation in Vienna, where “the entire historical center is a World Heritage site, and not just isolated buildings.” 20,000 people live in the World Heritage core zone and a further 200,000 every day level off, making the city center a dynamic living space for many people. He is very proud of this and definitely wants to “preserve and protect” the world heritage, for which there is also a separate resolution proposed by the Vienna city government.
Recommendations already implemented
Since the last UNESCO experts visited Vienna, a large part of their recommendations have already been put into practice. Since 2021, there has been a management plan for the “Historic Center of Vienna World Heritage Site,” a roof register of the historic old town has been implemented with the Federal Monuments Office, and since November 2023, the protection of the World Heritage Site has been anchored as a priority in Vienna’s building regulations. “In addition, the preservation of the world cultural heritage is also prominently represented in the 2035 urban development plan,” said the Mayor of Vienna. The delegation’s recommendations in 2019 were also addressed “with great commitment”.
Ludwig thanked the representatives of the Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) and the Ministry of Culture (BMKÖS) for “the well-rehearsed and trusting cooperation that has been going on for years.” He wished the members of the monitoring mission a pleasant stay in Vienna and was “confident that our joint discussions will open the door to a sustainable and future-oriented implementation in the spirit of the responsible tasks of all those involved.”
Delegation and monitoring mission
The delegation consists of the director of the World Heritage Center Lazare Eloundou Assomo, the UNESCO expert Reka Viragos, the ICOMOS expert Nicholas Clarke, the ICCROM expert Eugene Jo and the expert for world heritage impact assessments Prof. Michael Kloos. The experts will be in the city for a total of three days until Wednesday as part of a “monitoring mission” to get an idea of Vienna’s world heritage and to write a recommendation report by around mid-May. In July 2024, 21 representatives of the UN member states will meet at the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi to make a decision on Vienna’s future World Heritage status based on the Monitoring Mission’s recommendation report.
