Heurigen tradition in the Stammersdorfer Kellergasse on May 6th and 7th, 2023

Vienna (OTS) As part of the “Vienna Wine Festival”, the “Mailüfterl” is back on the program this weekend following a three-year break. Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig opened the event in his home district today, Saturday.

Punctually at 3 p.m. the official start of the “Mailüfterl” took place in front of the “Zur Christl” wine tavern. Every year tens of thousands of people visit the Kellergasse in Stammersdorf in the 21st district, which is converted into a pedestrian zone for the wine festival. Mayor Ludwig was pleased that the event is taking place once more following the break. “The wine festivals and especially the Maiventilatorl are well-known crowd pullers that enjoy great popularity far beyond the respective district borders.”

Ludwig also emphasized the district’s major contribution to the production of Viennese wine. Around 40 percent of the wine would come from Floridsdorf vines, said Ludwig. According to the Mayor of Vienna, Vienna is the only major city in the world with wine-growing regions within its city limits. Due to its outstanding cultural significance, the Viennese Heurigen culture was even included in the national UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in Austria in 2019. Finally, Ludwig promised to continue to protect this culture: “We have taken a variety of measures to ensure that this remains the case in the future.”

The “Maillufterl”

The “Mailüfterl” is organized by the association “Livable Floridsdorf”. Numerous restaurateurs and businesses present the local Heurigen tradition with fine delicacies, musical interludes, agricultural products and handicrafts. The program at the weekend not only includes a presentation of the winemakers’ own wines, but also fun and entertainment for young and old. Other fixed points in the wine calendar are the wine days on August 26th and 27th and the stormy days on October 7th and 8th .
