Franz-Josef Theis, Managing Director of the LBM, welcomed the trainees together with Nadine Schütze, Head of the Training and Further Education Department, in the LBM’s own premises for inter-company training in Mayen. The young men and the young woman have been working in one of the 57 road maintenance depots of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Mobility (LBM) since August 1, 2024.
“The demands placed on a road maintenance worker are diverse. During training, you will receive the technical skills to meet these demands. The ÜBA is an essential part,” said Franz-Josef Theis, welcoming the young employees. “We are delighted that you have chosen this profession and also us as LBM,” continued Theis. The LBM age structure shows a growing need for young, motivated colleagues. “Road maintenance workers are all-rounders; they are all urgently needed.” The LBM offers good prospects for the future: “Whether you are a master road maintenance worker, draftsman, university degree or a civil service career – the opportunities for further development with us are diverse.”
Franz-Josef Theis wished the aspiring road workers a good start and much success. “When you’re at work, always think about your own safety and the safety of your colleagues. Look out for each other,” he told them as they continued their careers.
The tasks of the road maintenance worker are demanding and responsible, varied and by no means boring. The “columns in orange” ensure road safety on the roads of Rhineland-Palatinate every day. They check the entire road network, keep drainage systems functioning, take care of broken road signs and, last but not least, ensure a safe road network during winter service.
In Mayen, 96 trainees from all over Rhineland-Palatinate are currently being trained as road maintenance workers in accordance with the requirements of a nationwide framework plan. Since every road maintenance department in the state has different requirements, the requirements of the framework plan can only be met in a common training facility. This has been set up centrally for all LBM trainees in Mayen since 1984.
The 36 weeks of inter-company training, which are spread over the three years of training in blocks of varying lengths, are primarily about practice. In the “sandpit” – a large hall with a sand area in which the activities of a road maintenance worker are practiced under real conditions – paving and bricklaying are carried out, for example. The prospective road maintenance workers also learn how to fell trees correctly and repair bridges, for example. An important part of their training is the correct signage of construction sites. Winter service and handling machines are also on the schedule. The prospective road maintenance workers also get their truck driving license during their time in Mayen.
Applications for training as a road maintenance worker starting on August 1, 2025 are still possible until September 30, 2024. Further information is available at karriere-im-lbm.de.

Welcoming the Future: LBM Trains New Generation of Road Maintenance Workers
As the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Mobility (LBM) continues to face the challenge of an aging workforce, the organization is placing a strong emphasis on attracting and developing young talent. In a recent ceremony, Franz-Josef Theis, Managing Director of the LBM, and Nadine Schütze, Head of the Training and Further Education Department, welcomed a group of new trainees to the organization’s premises in Mayen.
The 36 trainees, comprising young men and one young woman, have been appointed to one of the 57 road maintenance depots across Rhineland-Palatinate since August 1, 2024. As they embark on their three-year training journey, they will acquire the technical skills required to meet the diverse demands of a road maintenance worker.
“The tasks of a road maintenance worker are demanding and responsible, varied and by no means boring,” said Franz-Josef Theis, addressing the new recruits. “Road maintenance workers are all-rounders; they are all urgently needed.” He emphasized the importance of the Upper Bavarian Vocational Training Academy (ÜBA) in providing the essential skills and knowledge required for this critical profession.
During their training, the trainees will learn a wide range of skills, from checking and maintaining drainage systems to repairing broken road signs and ensuring road safety during winter service. They will also develop their skills in pavement construction, tree felling, and bridge repair, among others, in the LBM’s state-of-the-art training facility in Mayen.
Since 1984, the LBM has been providing centralized training for all trainees in Mayen, catering to the specific requirements of each road maintenance department across the state. The 36 weeks of inter-company training, spread over three years, focus primarily on practical skills, with trainees spending significant time in the “sandpit” – a large hall with a sand area that simulates real-world conditions.
“We are delighted that you have chosen this profession and also us as LBM,” said Theis, expressing his enthusiasm for the new recruits. “The opportunities for further development with us are diverse, whether you aim to become a master road maintenance worker, draftsman, or pursue a civil service career.”
As the trainees begin their careers, Theis emphasized the importance of prioritizing their own safety and the safety of their colleagues. ”When you’re at work, always think about your own safety and the safety of your colleagues. Look out for each other,” he advised.
The LBM’s commitment to attracting and developing young talent is crucial in addressing the growing need for skilled road maintenance workers. With its comprehensive training program and diverse career opportunities, the organization is well-positioned to shape the future of road maintenance in Rhineland-Palatinate.
