Saturday promises to be intense for supermarkets, before the long weekend of May 1. The unions had hinted that further actions would disrupt the opening. The management therefore anticipated by making extensive use of bailiffs and, in some places, the police as well, said Raoul Dekelver. If delays were noted at the opening, the vast majority of the 128 stores of the group welcomed customers. Among the seven Delhaize supermarkets closed on Saturday morning, two (at Ixelles et Mons) were at the request of the management, which adds to act preventively, and will keep doors closed until Tuesday. A third, at Molenbeek, is inaccessible due to previously planned work. The last four brands affected by a closure are located at Antwerp, Marcinelle et Montigny. Blocked by demonstrators on Thursday, the group’s distribution center in Zellik, Flemish Brabant, suffered no disruption on Saturday morning, according to the Delhaize spokesperson. Some goods were, however, unavailable on supermarket shelves, a consequence of this pre-Zellik paralysis. Since March 7 and the announcement by the management to franchise the 128 integrated Delhaize stores, the unions have been carrying out strike action in the supermarkets. A new extraordinary works council at Delhaize will be held on Tuesday. Management assures that the franchise will be accompanied by the maintenance of wages and working conditions for employees, but the unions are doubtful.
