May affect many flights: the meaning of the EU’s exceptional recommendation

The European Union published today (Saturday) an official recommendation not to fly in the skies over Lebanon and Israel until October 31. The recommendation refers to flights that will land, take off or pass through the area and may significantly affect aviation activity in the area. This is an unusual recommendation, one that is given in very unusual situations and may have a dramatic effect.

So far, quite a few foreign airlines have operated in Israel. Minutes after the publication of the recommendation, the airlines “Wiz Air” and “Air Europe” announced the cancellation of flights to Israel. “Air Europe” has canceled tomorrow’s flights, according to the flight schedule in Israel, and Wizz Air has canceled flights for the next 48 hours.

Additional airlines may make similar decisions following the recommendation of the European Union, which may significantly reduce the relatively limited supply that exists in Israel.

As of today, among the airlines that canceled their flights to Israel, even before the recommendation of the European Union, are: Air France, Iberia, British Airways, ITA, Virgin Atlantic, Aegean, Lottery, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, Eurowings , Ryanair, Delta, United, EasyJet, American Airlines, KLM and many other airlines.

The European Union’s announcement comes a few days before the holiday break in Israel, during which dozens of Israelis were supposed to fly every day to various destinations around the world.

At the same time as vacationing abroad, quite a few Israelis are now abroad and in a conversation with one of them who was stuck in Cyprus she says: “Our flight was canceled a few minutes before take off, we are trying to find an alternative solution but it is not cheap, we hope it will be okay and we can return to Israel As soon as possible with minimal loss.” If the trend of cancellations continues, we may see quite a few Israelis who will have difficulty returning to Israel from abroad in time for Rosh Hashanah.
