May 24, 1976, Bishop Hyacinthe Thiandoum becomes the first Cardinal of the Senegalese Church

It was at the Catholic mission of Ngazobil that Hyacinthe Thiandoum underwent his training following which he became a priest on April 18, 1949. His exemplary nature and his remarkable work will carry him to the highest stations of the Church in Senegal, including the title of Cardinal which he obtained on May 24, 1976.

Priest, archbishop, then first cardinal of the Senegalese Church, Hyacinthe Thiandoum dedicated his whole life to the cause of the Catholic religion. Born February 2, 1921 in Poponguine, influenced by his catechist father, he entered the major seminary of Dakar following his secondary studies and was ordained a priest in the cathedral of Dakar.

Having become Archbishop of Dakar on February 24, 1962, Hyacinthe Thiandoum was consecrated on May 20; he thus became the first autochthonous archbishop of this diocese. This follows his studies at the Gregorian University where he obtained a degree in philosophy and sociology. A few years later, on May 24, 1976, Bishop THiandoum was created Cardinal by Pope Paul VI.
