Máximo Carrizo, 14, became the youngest signing in MLS history on Monday, signing with the New York City FC first team.
Carrizo, a Manhattan native of Argentine roots, broke the previous record set by Real Salt Lake forward Axel Kei (14 years and 15 days), while Carrizo did so by turning 14.

“We are pleased to sign Máximo to his first professional contract as this is a historic moment for both the club and MLS,” team sporting director David Lee said in a statement.
Lee described Carrizo as a “special player” who has been developing in recent years in the club’s academy.
Carrizo, the team revealed, is currently completing a week-long trip to the academy in the UK, where he has participated in several games alongside his teammates.
The player joined the NYCFC academy in 2018 from FC Westchester as an under-12 player and was then invited to the club’s first-team pre-season camp in 2022.
Earlier this year, he was called up to a US U-15 junior national team training camp.
Carrizo is eligible to play in NYCFC II, which will compete in the new MLS NEXT Pro league. Current MLS champion City lost on opening day to the LA Galaxy.
