Maximizing Thermal Efficiency and Reducing Energy Consumption for Your Swimming Pool: Tips from Swimming Pool Specialist LPW Pools

Monenergie.beA private swimming pool in your garden is synonymous with refreshment and relaxation. On less hot days you also want to be able to bathe in a pleasant way. Fortunately, there are several solutions to heat your water. Which is better and how can you reduce your consumption? Monenergie.be asked these questions to Antoon Boeykens of swimming pool specialist LPW Pools.

Avoid heat loss

“Up to 80% of pool heat is lost along the surface of the water,” according to our expert. “You won’t have to add heat that hasn’t been lost overnight. In this context, the choice of an insulating shutter which makes it possible to avoid the evaporation of water, is an important first step in order to obtain maximum thermal efficiency.

The insulation of the swimming pool also contributes considerably to this. Some pools have standard insulation, but ask regarding additional insulation techniques! So you can add foam insulation around your pool.”

Energy prices are on the rise once more: Should I choose a fixed rate?

Heating with a heat pump

According to Antoon Boeykens, heat pumps are currently the most common. A heat pump extracts heat from the air and transports it via a coolant, following which it will evaporate into gas. The compression of this gas makes it possible to increase the temperature. A heat exchanger transfers the heat directly to the pool water which flows through it.

“The advantage: a heat pump always works. So you can benefit from the heat at any time. When you organize a garden party, the heat of the water in your swimming pool will therefore not depend on the outside temperature at that time.

Solar collectors

An alternative: solar collectors that use solar energy to provide heat. They are very similar to solar panels, but instead of generating electricity from sunlight, solar collectors generate heat using the sun’s heat.

“This system works efficiently and is priced favourably. However, there is a major drawback associated with it: it needs the heat of the sun. On cloudy and cooler days, it will therefore be difficult to reach the desired temperature. You should also pay attention to possible water leaks in the small pipes of the solar collectors.”

Solar panel prices are falling rapidly: Why? And to what extent do consumers feel this?

Solar shutters

Another way that does not require energy: ‘solar blinds’. “I sometimes think of them as ‘conservatory systems’. The shutter functions as a room or greenhouse on the water. The sun heats the space in the shutter, which also increases the temperature of the water. Here too, the major disadvantage is that the shutter depends on the sun. However, we have noticed that this solution is becoming more and more popular.”

Increase self-consumption

Antoon Boeykens has noticed that his customers have become more interested in their energy consumption since last year’s energy crisis. “A heat pump meets the demand for energy-efficient systems. The warmer it is outside, the fewer kilowatt hours you will need to consume to heat the water.

Those who have a digital meter are encouraged to consume their energy when the solar panels generate it. In addition, this allows you to distribute your peak consumption, so that your capacity tariff is not increased.”
