L’Usine Nouvelle – Since 2005, L’Oréal’s global CO2 emissions have fallen by 91% despite increasing production. Are you producing cleaner or does decarbonization increase your productivity?
Antoine Vanlaeys – We have demonstrated that we are capable of decorrelating our growth in volume from the reduction in the impact of scope 1 and 2 of our assets. Since 2005, our CO2 emissions have been reduced by 91% in absolute value, while our volumes have increased by 45%. Out of 38 production sites, 22 today use exclusively renewable energy. We have come a large part of the way to achieve our objective of 100% in 2025 on scopes 1 and 2, without losing productivity, on the contrary.
The first axis is sobriety, the second is energy efficiency. We analyze all our consumption and implement the most suitable solutions, such as low-consumption automatic lighting, variable speed compressors with heat recovery, or exchangers using our fatal energies. We optimize our processes to lower energy intensity. Every time we work on the processes, it increases capacity and output. Operational excellence is at the heart of our decarbonization strategy.
Scope 2 is managed with energy suppliers to achieve our 100% renewable objectives, whether wind, hydraulic or solar, in particular by signing PPAs. Replacing our gas supplies is the main challenge, for which we are switching to electric or biomass boilers. We also invest in biomethanization units, such as on our Saint-Quentin site (Aisne) and in Libramont in Belgium. The last example is that of Caudry (North) where we have invested in self-consumption solar installations which ensure around 10% of the site’s electrical needs.
