Making money from a long stay – that’s what the Star Alliance member is trying to do on his flights to Athens. Ethiopian Airlines makes its Boeing 737 Max available for wet lease operations with a partner.

Long idle times mean lost income – at least in simple terms you can say that. And the waiting time at Ethiopian Airlines during the round trip to Athens is quite long. The Boeing 737 Max that is used on the route has been idle in the Greek capital for almost 24 hours.

Four days a week – Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – the planes arrive at 3 a.m. and then depart just following 1 a.m. a day later. So it’s a stay of around 22 hours. Ethiopian Airlines now wants to use this to generate additional income.

Boeing 737 Max mit Business Class

With the help of a partner, Ethiopian wants to make better use of its Boeing 737 Max. The Cypriot wet lease company Zela Aviation announced that a strategic agreement had been reached with the airline. The Boeing 737 Max will be available for short-term wet lease or charter operations during the downtime.

According to a statement from Zela Aviation, they hope to jointly provide availability for the European market from Athens. The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max aircraft used on the route have space for 16 travelers in business class, with wider seats and higher pitch, and 144 in economy class.
