Microsoft is introducing a new power saving mode for Windows 11 desktops and laptops. You may be wondering why Windows 11 needs another power saving mode when it has a battery saving option. However, the battery saver option only temporarily shuts down functions that consume a lot of power, such as automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps that are not in use. The new power saving mode extends and “boosts” beyond what the battery saving option alone can achieve in reducing system power consumption, according to Microsoft. In other words, it will help you get more screen time before the battery dies, but it comes at the cost of systemic performance. Microsoft didn’t go into specific details regarding what using power saving mode means for performance. Power Saving Mode is being tested as part of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26002. It can be turned on or off from Quick Settings or from Settings by navigating to System > Power. There is also an option to turn it on automatically when the battery reaches a specified percentage. If you have a desktop computer that doesn’t rely on a battery, Microsoft is still enabling the feature “for those who aim to save power all the time.” Extending battery life with one click is very convenient, but reducing the amount of power your desktop computer consumes can reduce your electricity bill.
