Maxime Lestienne (31) left Standard Liège two years ago. Since then, he has been scoring goals in Singapore, with Lion City Sailors FC.

Most decisive player in the world in 2023, Maxime Lestienne gave an interview to Transfer market. He spoke regarding his career, as well as his departure from Standard.

“I had lost motivation. I played four years at Standard. My first season was good, despite the injuries. The second was very good, and I was even called up to the national team. The third not great , individually and collectively. There were some problems at the club and it was felt on everyone. And the fourth not good at all. I was even sent to core B, following a small conflict with the president (Bruno Venanzi).”

Lestienne explains his departure from Standard and the conflict with management

Lestienne gives more details on what motivated him to leave and sign for Singapore. “It was at a time when I really wanted to leave. I had offers and I pushed for my transfer, but the club refused. After that, I didn’t really have the head at Standard anymore, so I am partly responsible. When you are under contract with a club, you have to respect it. There was a little altercation. I lost a bit of a temper, but I didn’t do anything serious. In core B , I continued to work for myself, to prepare myself for a transfer. Then I had a discussion with the president, we explained and we put things straight. Today, I I always have respect for him, because he is a good person.”

Maxime Lestienne plans to retire from work in 2026

“If Lion City Sailors FC is my last club? Yes, I think so. I re-signed here for two years (until 2026), so I will be 33 when my contract ends. It all depends on how I will feel physically. But I’m not thinking regarding it too much at the moment. Two years ago I didn’t want to play anymore and now I’ve changed my mind, because I love football once more and I have confidence in myself. So I can’t project myself.”

The Belgian doesn’t think he’ll return to Europe either. “I don’t have any more pressure here. I’m given a lot of freedom and that’s what I wanted. I needed it. I started in the professional world at 16, I’ve always worked hard to Getting there, there were ups and downs, but I think I’ve had a nice little career. Now I’m more relaxed. I do my job and come home to enjoy the family.”
