This Wednesday, in the Croky Cup, Maxime Dupé will start between the poles of Sporting d’Anderlecht. Enough to warm his heart, but not convince him to stay?
The atmosphere is good at RSC Anderlecht, but there is one who is not really smiling: Maxime Dupé. The goalkeeper arrived last summer with the certainty of starting, but saw Kasper Schmeichel arrive at the very end of the transfer window. Quickly, he rose to No. 2, and is understandably not thrilled. Jesper Fredberg has already mentioned this situation during the Anderlecht winter camp (read here); this Tuesday, at a press conference, Brian Riemer also spoke about it.
“Maxime is happy to be at Anderlecht, but that being said… Of course he wants to play. It’s not like he desperately wants to leave because, like I said, there are positives too” , first qualifies the Sporting coach with his usual optimism. Dupé remained very professional during this difficult period, and will therefore be rewarded in the quarter-final. “We are hoping for a win, which would mean more playing time for him.”
A departure of Maxime Dupé remains possible
But the RSCA will not necessarily put obstacles in the way of its reserve goalkeeper if an opportunity presents itself. “The transfer window is open. We have a very positive dialogue with him and his agent regarding the situation. If I told you that he has no desire to leave, that would be a lie,” concedes Riemer honestly. “This is not an ideal situation for Max. Until now, there was nothing we could do about it, but now anything is possible.”
Anderlecht would prefer to keep Dupé, because the arrival of Schmeichel was also linked to the fact that the understudies (Coosemans and Vercauteren) were not very reliable. “Is it possible that Maxime will no longer be with us on February 1? Yes. But is it possible that he is still there? Yes, too. Of course, the situation is different from what he hoped for”, knows well Brian Riemer. “We always listen to the players, and the discussion with Maxime is very positive.”
In the meantime, Maxime Dupé will play big this Wednesday against Union Saint-Gilloise. For his credibility in the fight for the No. 1 position, but also and above all because in the event of elimination, he will be permanently confined to the bench, barring injury or suspension of Schmeichel. What if, in the end, tomorrow’s result therefore determined his choice to stay or not?
