Maxiliano Jara’s Inspiring Story: From Homelessness to Medical School

Maxiliano Jara is synonymous with improvement. In a society with so many problems, he lived with the worst: not having a roof over his head. He spent a month in a square and not even that situation intimidated him, to the point that he now pursues his dream: to be a doctor. In the Telenoche report, he says that he got one following studying Medicine.

The first night he slept on the street he was worried regarding three things. The first, to make sure that nothing happened to Gabriela, his mother, and William, his 10-year-old brother; the second, waking up in time to take the child to school; the third, to arrive on time to his Society and State class at the Agronomy headquarters of the University of Buenos Aires.

The conditions are not the best, to the point that he had to walk nine kilometers because he might not afford to get on a bus. But far from victimizing himself, the young man aims to improve. “I want to be a doctor to help people. I enrolled in medical school, now I received the opportunity to have a scholarship, so I am very happy with that.”

Her mother, in turn, reveals all the complications she had to overcome. “He didn’t miss a day. He went without eating, dirty, dizzy from not having food, fainting, in storm or heat he walked those nine kilometers.”

Why were they left on the street?

They were in a boarding house, but they must have gone through something bad: the owner’s son tried to abuse Gabriela, Maxi’s mother. “Living on the street makes you feel cold, afraid and insecure. People distrust you because you don’t know what kind of life they had.”

In turn, Gabriela gave more details. “It was a tough situation. Because he might touch me, but out of revenge he might also abuse the youngest, that’s why we decided to leave there.”
