Maxi Kleber Bids Farewell to German National Team
Dallas Mavericks center Maxi Kleber has closed the door on his career with the German national basketball team. In a statement made to the Augsburger Allgemeine, Kleber, now 32 years old and with 30 international games under his belt, declared, “The topic of the national team is finally over for me. Therefore, there will be no return.”
This decision comes after Kleber missed the 2023 FIBA World Cup, a tournament that saw Germany clinch a historic victory and claim the world championship title for the first time. His absence was due to disagreements with then-captain Dennis Schröder, acircumstance that regrettably caused him to miss out on being part of this monumental achievement under the leadership of former national coach Gordon Herbert.。
Kleber Cheers on Germany from the Stands at Paris Olympics
While Kleber is stepping away from representing Germany on the court, he remains a dedicated fan. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he watched intently as the reigning world champions faced a tough challenge, ultimately falling to France in the quarterfinals.
“On the whole, it’s ultimately about the sport of basketball continuing to grow in Germany. And the Olympic Games, where you can watch all the matches on television, are a great event,” Kleber shared. “I know many of the players or am friends with them, so it’s a lot of fun to watch them and keep your fingers crossed.”
The future looks bright for German basketball even as Kleber moves on to the next chapter in his career.
