Max Verstappen’s Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying Session: Alleged Violations, Reprimands, and Controversy

2023-09-16 22:43:41

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was summoned by the stewards following a nightmarish qualifying session for the Singapore Grand Prix due to a total of three alleged violation of regulations, but in all cases he avoided a demotion penalty.

Verstappen is in unprecedented good shape with 10 consecutive wins, but his RB19 lacked competitiveness at the Marina Bay city course, and in qualifying he was only 7/1000ths of a second behind newcomer Liam Lawson (AlphaTauri) from his sister team. He was dropped and was eliminated in Q2 in 11th place.

No matter how good your race pace is, it is extremely difficult to overtake at Marina Bay, making it extremely difficult to recover in the race. Even from 11th place was tough, but Verstappen was summoned by the stewards following the session. In addition to poor performance, the flow is poor.

Reprimand for interfering with Hiroki Tsunoda

Among the three charges, it seemed difficult to avoid a demotion penalty for blocking Yuki Tsunoda’s path at Turn 3.

However, the four-member competition jury, including Vitantonio Liuzzi, only gave him a reprimand (for driving). Why?

According to the stewards, sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, who attended on behalf of Red Bull, explained that there was a lack of communication and that he did not warn Verstappen until Hiroki Tsunoda was level.

Stewards have taken into account precedent from this season and have issued “reprimands to drivers and fines to competitors consistent with previous rulings regarding the seriousness of the offences.” Red Bull was ordered to pay 5,000 euros (approximately 788,000 yen).

What should be noted is AlphaTauri’s response. The hearing would normally be attended by the drivers involved in the incident and team representatives, but stewards said that for some reason AlphaTauri representatives decided not to attend the hearing with the senior team.

Yuki Tsunoda, who messed up his first timed lap, tried to take advantage of his last chance, but made a mistake. This was a very disappointing result, as he might have advanced to Q3 with a personal best in Q1.

No offense to interfering with Sgt.

It was ruled not guilty for interfering with Logan Sargent (Williams) during a quick lap between turns 17 and 18 in Q1.

At the time, multiple vehicles were traveling at low speeds in this section, causing traffic jams. With cars constantly passing him on the right and sometimes on the left, Verstappen insisted that the safest option was to open up a one-car space on the right and hold the line. .

Additionally, the stewards dismissed the matter as Sargent claimed that Verstappen was not at fault and was able to pass the No. 1 RB19 without any problems.

Reprimand for obstructing pit lane

A decision was made to issue a reprimand for the driver who was said to have stopped for a long time in the pit lane even though the green light was on, obstructing others following him.

Verstappen said the reason for the stop was to create space between him and the car in front. According to the stewards, this lasted approximately 14 seconds.

Stewards ruled that Verstappen had not gained an advantage despite an “unusually long wait” at the pit exit. However, he was given a reprimand because he had “the potential to have an adverse effect” on other drivers.

Although violations were recognized in two of the three cases, all resulted in reprimands (driving) and no penalty points were awarded. If Verstappen receives three more driving reprimands this season, he will receive a 10-place grid penalty in the next race.
