Three world championship titles in a row, 19 victories in 22 races last year and around 60 million francs in income – and yet Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen is also struggling with strange problems during his vacation. Before the Dutchman flew to Brazil for the holidays, he invited people to a racing trip in Portugal, rented the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve race track and around 20 cars.
However, the car rental company Sixt thwarted Verstappen’s plans for his dream car, a Mercedes AMG GT: at 26, he is too young to rent this car. A source tells the English newspaper “The Sun” that the Formula 1 world champion was shocked by this handling: “He is an experienced F1 driver who is used to driving high-performance cars. So it’s pretty amazing to think that he wasn’t allowed to get behind the wheel of that car – but those are the rules, so he followed them.” But Verstappen still had a 5 Series BMW that was available in his age group. His manager was allowed to take over the AMG GT.
A spokesman for Sixt confirmed to “The Sun”: “The employees of our franchise partner in Portugal only followed the rules that arise for insurance reasons.” In order to find a customer-friendly solution on site, Mr. Verstappen was provided with another premium vehicle. “However, there are special circumstances that justify a deviation from the rules. This is one such case. We apologize to Mr. Verstappen. He can rent the car he wants from us at any time. There is of course no doubt regarding his driving skills and his experience with high-performance cars.”
