Verstappen recorded the fastest lap time, recording 1 minute and 28.600 seconds across the 5,891-kilometre Silverstone track, outperforming Sergio Perez by 0.448 seconds. Alex Albon, Williams driver, was third.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was fourth, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were fifth and seventh, respectively.

Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished 12th and 14th, respectively, and the duo reported that the car’s bounce was very bad.

Verstappen leads the drivers’ category standings with 229 points, 81 points ahead of Perez.

And following climate activists took to the track for the first lap last year, Silverstone officials worked with police to increase security during the event as they prepare for possible new protests.

Sporting events have been invariably targeted by protesters, with Just Stop Oil activists blocking play at the Wimbledon tennis tournament this week.

And over the weekend, the Silverstone track will host the filming of a Formula 1-inspired movie, which Hamilton is helping to produce, with Hollywood star Brad Pitt playing the role of a Formula 1 driver.

As part of filming, the fictional Apex GP team that Brad Pitt will be driving in the film was given a garage in the pits between the Ferrari and Mercedes garages.

Pitt will be filmed racing a modified Formula 2 car ahead of the second practice session later in the day.
