In rainy and changeable weather conditions, Verstappen achieved the best lap of the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit of the third session in 1 min 25 s 858/1000.

German Nico Hülkenberg will be alongside him on the front row, even though he was 1.244s behind. The Haas driver managed to do a flying lap just before the last qualifying phase was interrupted by an off track by Oscar Piastri (McLaren).

The big loser of this surprise: Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), with the 3rd time (1.428 s), who had to slow down due to the accident.

Gray skies like Friday’s made Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve very tricky for the drivers. The Canadian Lance Stroll signed the 13th fastest time in qualifying, eliminated in Q2.

It is nevertheless the first time in five visits to the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit that Stroll has passed the first phase of qualifying.

Stroll lost control of his vehicle on his first lap on intermediate tires. Then, while the majority of the riders had opted for the soft compounds, Stroll came out on the intermediate compounds and was not able to register a time fast enough to enter the top 10.

And when the Quebecer finally put on the soft tires, the rain began to fall on the circuit.

I think we were on the wrong tires in Q2. I hit the wall, then I came back and we put on the intermediate ones, but at that moment, we should have put on the slick tires, and then when we put on the slicks, it started to rain. We had the wrong tires at the wrong timecommented Stroll.

In his four previous Canadian Grand Prix appearances, Stroll has finished in the top-10 three times, including ninth-place finishes in 2017 and 2019.

Stroll sits 8th in the driver standings this season with 35 points.

The changing conditions in the second part of qualifying also precipitated the end of the working day for Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Sergio Perez (Red Bull).
