Sebastian Vettel wouldn’t hold a grudge if Max Verstappen equaled his ten-year F1 record of nine straight wins on Sunday. Verstappen started the Dutch Grand Prix in his home country on pole position and is a strong contender for a third straight win at Zandvoort.
If Verstappen wins and matches the record set by Vettel in 2013 with Red Bull, he might aim even higher at Monza in Italy a week later. World champions leader Verstappen told reporters following qualifying that four-time world champion Vettel sent him a text message of encouragement. After five wins in a row, I got an email from Seb saying, ‘Well done, keep it going’ or ‘You can do it’,” Verstappen said. “But I was like, ‘Winning nine in a row is amazing’ and I didn’t think I might already win eight in a row,” he said. It’s not a thing and I’m not always thinking ‘I have to do this, I have to do this’.” “I’m not in this sport to break records. I win in this moment. I’m only here for it.” Zandvoort is not an easy track to overtake, and Verstappen was more than half a second faster than McLaren’s Lando Norris in qualifying. McLaren looked quick, but Red Bull has won 21 of its last 13, 22 races and generally has a wider lead on Sunday than on Saturday. “Max was too quick for us today, but I think we put up a good fight,” said Norris, who is yet to finish on the top of the F1 podium. “At the moment in the race, I don’t think we have a chance unless someone gets unlucky or he gets unlucky and something happens.” He’s doing his job and I fully respect that.”But Norris said there is always the possibility that Verstappen will make a mistake. “It can happen to anyone and it can happen to him. So there is a time and a place and in a way we are still waiting for it. That wasn’t the case today.”
