On his current album “PLOY” (Session Work Records), the drummer MAX PLATTNER, who comes from Tyrol, and his band give a truly exciting sample of his own vision of modern jazz, which expands into other genres.
His previous releases have already impressively shown that Max Plattner cultivates absolute musical freedom without any restrictions rather than working on fixed structures and forms. Musical one-dimensionality and sticking to classical standards are definitely not his thing. Rather, Max Plattner draws his inspiration from a wide variety of musical directions. The art that he masters excellently is to create a very unique sound from the hodgepodge of different things.
Max Plattner also follows his tried and tested approach on his current album “PROY”. Once once more, the drummer defines his musical field of activity very broadly. The pieces that he performs together with his bandmates Andi Tausch (electric guitar), Marco Stagni (double bass, electric bass) and Sebastian Schneider (synth, keyboard, piano) as well as a track with the singer Anja Obermayer is somewhere between jazz, new music, electronics, rock and hip hop in an exciting way. Through the generous integration of improvisation, they develop their very own aesthetic, which resonates in a variety of ways through a wide variety of moods and intensities. At one point, what is presented follows a rather calm and spherical tone, at another an unleashed groove or a strong melody. Then it becomes rhythmically more complex and experimental or weirdly spacey once more. The nice thing is that the music remains accessible and open at every moment, without drifting into the awkward.
With “PLOY”, Max Plattner and his band definitely deliver an album on which jazz is presented from a different perspective. This happens in a really exciting and, above all, imagination-stimulating way. An exciting listening experience.
