A year and a half ago, ski star Max Franz’s career was hanging by a thread after a horror fall. Now the Austrian dreams of a return to the World Cup.

November 13, 2022 was a major turning point in Max Franz’s life. On that day, the Austrian ski racer suffered horrific injuries in a fall – now, 502 days later, he has returned to the ski slopes for the first time.

The 34-year-old beamed with joy when he announced this moving moment on Instagram: “After 502 days, the time has come! Finally back on the slopes with skis,” wrote Franz.

The Austrian, who has won three World Cup races so far, posted two photos from the summit of the Gasselhöh near Schladming, including one with his doctor.

“A special moment that I shared with my doctor, Dr. Jürgen Mandl, was able to experience it at my side,” Franz added. “Thank you for the incredible mini tour, it means so much to me!”

The speed specialist, who had repeatedly been set back by serious injuries in his career, broke both of his lower legs in a training fall in Copper Mountain (US state of Colorado) a year and a half ago.

The left leg was particularly affected: an open fracture of the lower leg and 80 percent of a nerve was severed. Franz, who was dependent on a wheelchair for a long time, had to undergo a total of five operations.

But he is not thinking about ending his career yet, the goal is “to get something going next season,” the Krone quoted the Austrian, who was a guest at the World Cup final in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in mid-March.
