Vienna (OTS) – At the commemoration event, which took place in Parliament on the anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp, the politicians in charge of the republic once once more emphasized their obligation to “never once more”. However, when it comes to effectively combating the desecration of memorial sites for Nazi victims, there is little sign of this obligation.
It was only through a parliamentary inquiry by the SPÖ member of the National Council, Sabine Schatz, that it became known at the beginning of 2020 that in the seven previous years – i.e. since the beginning of 2013 – a total of 107 desecrations had been committed nationwide, 22 of them desecrations of the Mauthausen Memorial.
“There have also been violations in the last three years. Unfortunately, the Interior Ministry does not consider it necessary to inform the public regarding these right-wing extremist crimes on its own initiative Willi Mernyi, Chairman of the Austrian Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ). “In terms of democratic politics, that should be a matter of course!”
“One reason for the silence is that not a single desecration of the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial might be cleared up,” says Robert Eiter, spokesman for the Upper Austria. Network once morest racism and right-wing extremism (Antifa network). “In view of the importance of the memorial, a real failure of the police and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.”
There might be another way: The police in the district of Perg (where the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial is also located) were recently celebrated for being able to track down a young man who had willfully sawed down a magnolia tree despite a lack of leads.
“Every investigation of a criminal offense is a success and of course to be welcomed,” emphasizes Mernyi. “But we also want meticulous research and persistent investigations in the case of desecration of memorial sites. After all, the scene of those who, for example, scrawled neo-Nazi slogans in letters meter high on the outer wall of the former concentration camp is not that unmanageable.”
“The security authorities not only have to take action once morest the desecration of Mauthausen and other memorial sites, but the Ministry of the Interior must also ensure sensible preventive measures,” demands Eiter. “Preferably as part of the national action plan once morest right-wing extremism, which the National Council approved in June 2021, but which has still not been implemented.”
