Mauritania: one death and four cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

The Mauritanian Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that it had recorded four cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, including one critical case, and one death following this disease, while two other subjects are being treated in Mauritanian hospitals.

The ministry also announced a cure since the discovery of the first case of the disease at the beginning of this month of February, results obtained following 31 tests carried out in recent days.

In a statement issued a few days ago, Director General of Health Mohamed Mahmoud Ely Mahmoud said that the appearance of this disease in the country is not worrying and that it occurs every year.

He had called on people in contact with animals to avoid contact with animals in general and particularly those who are sick.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is one of the most dangerous fevers known and the World Health Organization has said that the virus that carries the disease is transmitted to humans by ticks and cattle, and from person to person through direct contact with a sick person’s blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of the infected person.

The WHO adds that despite the discovery of this disease a long time ago, there is so far no vaccine once morest it either for humans or animals, and the medical protocol followed in the event of the discovery of the disease is limited to the treatment of the symptoms that have appeared in addition to a permanent follow-up of the patient.
