The Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy, Nani Ould Achrouqa, expects that his country will begin exporting natural gas by the end of the first quarter of next year, from the “Turtle Ahmim” field, as Mauritania seeks to benefit from its natural wealth in order to advance the country’s economy.
“By the end of the first quarter of 2024, the first ship of Mauritanian gas will be shipped,” Ould Achrouqa said, in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, on the sidelines of the ADIPEC conference and exhibition in Abu Dhabi.
According to what the Mauritanian minister said, his country has two main gas fields, the “Turtle Ahmeem” field, which is shared with Senegal, and the other is “Bir Allah”, and their reserves together amount to 50 trillion cubic feet.
At the beginning of this year, Mauritania announced the completion of 90 percent of the construction stages of the “Turtlefa Ahmeem” field, which is being developed by BP, expecting actual production to begin by the end of the year. “The field will be exploited very soon,” Ould Achrouqa told Sky News Arabia.
As for the “Bir Allah” field, which is being developed by the British company BP and the American company Kosmos, the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum stated that it is much larger than the “Turtle Ahmeem” field, and “it will be exploited in 2027 or 2028.”
Renewable energy
The Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy told Sky News Arabia that his country has tremendous opportunities in the field of renewable energy, noting the signing of 4 memorandums of understanding regarding hydrogen production with international companies, including BP, Total, and the UAE’s Masdar.
He pointed out that increasing energy capabilities in Mauritania is an essential element in the process of developing the country’s economy, explaining that his country has good indicators for regarding 900 minerals, “but the main barrier to their exploitation is the availability of energy.”
He said that Mauritania exports regarding 12 or 13 million tons of iron ore annually, but without added value, and that his country is seeking to provide quantities of energy that will allow it to manufacture steel instead of just exporting the ore.
“Providing energy will contribute to adding value to the green steel industry in Mauritania, as well as exploiting other minerals such as gold, copper, uranium, cobalt and nickel… of which we have large quantities, and which have not been exploited for a long time… and we expect that the development of the country’s energy sources will stimulate the exploitation of these Resources,” according to what the Mauritanian minister said.
