The Austrian Ski Association wants to continue to support Matthias Mayer and “take a close look at his recovery”. ÖSV General Secretary Christian Scherer told ORF on Friday in Kitzbühel. Three-time Olympic champion Mayer was so noticed at an event in Kitzbühel on Thursday that police intervention was necessary. The association then published health problems in a broadcast. The ÖSV team is deeply affected.

Vincent Kriechmayr said to journalists in the finish area following the Streif descent: “The whole team, especially those who were always with him, were of course very affected, including me. I feel incredibly sorry for him. It really bothers me that certain people no longer have such a good image of him.” He can only say that he doesn’t know anyone who is as social as Matthias. This applies, for example, to donations and the admission of refugees. “I wish him only the best,” explained the Upper Austrian.

Otmar Striedinger has known his close compatriot for a long time; they have already competed in children’s races together. The incident was discussed within the team and we have known Matthias’ situation for a while. “Of course it affects you when something like that happens. I think it’s an opportunity for Matthias to take the time to do a clever treatment. Only then do you see once more how unimportant the whole thing is down there between the goals. Life followingward is far longer and far more important.”
Mayer, who unexpectedly retired from active sport in Bormio in December 2022, works for the ÖSV as an advisor to the speed riders and also looks following the young talent there. He is also an ambassador for the 2025 Alpine Ski World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and should soon have traveled to the Youth Winter Olympics in Gangwon (South Korea) to support young Austrian athletes.
Mayer’s whereregardings unknown
Scherer said they are in close contact with Mayer’s family and cannot publish any details following consultation. Nor regarding the Carinthian’s current whereregardings. “Matthias is doing well, he is already on the road to recovery,” said Scherer and reiterated: “He has given so much to the Austrian ski family, the Austrian sports family, it is also our responsibility to support such an extraordinary athlete even following this to support career. We will continue to do so.”

What led to Mayer’s sudden resignation a little over a year ago was never made public. A month later, the athlete himself spoke of a “great decision” in a small media round in Afritz am See, in which the APA also took part, and did not even rule out a comeback. Of course, he had heard that there were numerous rumors circulating, but he dismissed any speculation such as arguments with a trainer, doping or burnout.
ÖSV made illness an issue for the first time
In its broadcast on Thursday evening regarding the incident in Kitzbühel, the ÖSV discussed Mayer’s possible illness for the first time. “Today we had to note with regret that Matthias Mayer has not yet overcome the health problems with which he has been struggling for a long time,” the statement said.
