Why do children get diabetes?

Consultant Doctor of Pediatric Endocrinology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia – Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Dr. Frida Soesanti, Sp.A (K), explained that diabetes mellitus (DM) is basically divided into two, namely type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus Type 1 in children is usually caused because the cells in the pancreas that are supposed to produce insulin are damaged as a result of an autoimmune process.

In this condition, antibodies attack insulin-producing cells or pancreatic beta cells.

Type 1 diabetes not because of their lifestyle or obesity, so usually they have genes that make them susceptible to type 1 diabetes, many triggers can be due to infection and others,” said Frida to Kompas.com, Monday (24/1/2022).

According to her, diabetes in children in contrast to adults, where type 1 diabetes tends to be more common in children.

Pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes also need insulin for the rest of their lives as treatment.

“If the cells that produce insulin are damaged, then there is only one medicine, give insulin from the outside. In contrast to type 2 diabetes, which is caused by obesity, there is a lot of insulin but it can’t work properly,” he explained.

“That’s why (treatment) of type 2 DM can be with drinking drugs or changes lifestyle (lifestyle),” he added.

Can diabetes mellitus be inherited from parents?

Related to this, Dr. Frida said parents who have a history of diabetes mellitus will not necessarily pass the disease on to their children.

“For type 1 DM, most of them do not have a family history of DM either. Only 2 percent of children with type 1 DM have a family history of DM as well,” explained Frida.

In contrast to children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes, they usually have a family history of the disease. As many as 80 percent of patients have a parent or family member who also has type 2 diabetes.

Frida said, symptoms of diabetes in children almost the same as that of adults. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Often thirsty and drink more
  • Drastic weight loss
  • As well as easily hungry

“In children, it is often only diagnosed when it is critical. So, approximately 50 to 60 percent of DM patients in children are diagnosed when the condition is severe, usually the child comes, is unconscious, has shortness of breath,” he said.

Therefore, parents also need to pay attention if the child begins to show signs or symptoms of diabetes.

One of them is, if the child has stopped bedwetting and then suddenly returns to wetting while sleeping, it indicates that the child has symptoms of diabetes mellitus.

“If there are signs like this, then you should go to the doctor. Later, a urine test or blood sugar will be checked,” said Frida while explaining the symptoms of diabetes in children.

Unfortunately, type 1 diabetes mellitus in children has yet to be prevented. According to Frida, doctors are still focusing on treating diabetes by administering insulin.

“For type 1 DM, we have not been able to prevent it, but what we can do is early detection. If there are signs of diabetes in children, immediately come to the doctor, so the doctor can carry out the necessary examinations,” explained Frida.

Meanwhile, type 2 diabetes in children can be prevented by improving diet and lifestyle so that children are not overweight or obese.

“The risk factors for the occurrence of type 2 DM in children and adolescents are obesity and because they do not move much. Especially in the pandemic era everything is done onlineI gain weight because I don’t move at all,” he concluded.
