Scam alert! In a message published on Instagram this Wednesday, the Matthew Perry Foundation warned its subscribers once morest an ongoing scam on X (formerly Twitter), reports Sky News.
“It has been reported to us that Matthew’s official X page has been hacked, redirecting users to a fraudulent site that calls for cryptocurrency donations,” the organization wrote in the post, which has since been deleted.
Created in 2022 to help people suffering from addiction, the foundation called on Internet users not to make donations to this site. “MatthewPerryFoundation.org is the only website associated with the foundation, and we only accept donations through that,” she said.
The deleted tweet
The fraudulent link was displayed in a post pinned to the X account of the actor, known for his role as Chandler Bing in the series Friends. In the process, Internet users warned other subscribers that the account was hacked. The tweet was eventually deleted.
As a reminder, Matthew Perry died on October 28 in Los Angeles (United States). He was found unconscious in the jacuzzi of his apartment. The 54-year-old actor spoke regarding his long battle with addiction in his memoir titled Friends, My Loves and This Terrible Thing. He was working to establish the Matthew Perry Foundation when he died. The latter was launched the day following the tragedy.
