PEOPLE – “When I die, I don’t want to talk regarding Friends first, I want to talk regarding helping others first”. The last wishes of actor Matthew Perry, who died at the age of 54 on October 28, have now been fulfilled. A foundation in his name was created this Friday, November 3, to help people suffering from addiction.

“The Matthew Perry Foundation is the realization of Matthew’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction. He will honor his legacy and be guided by his own words and experiences and driven by his passion to make a difference in as many lives as possible.”indicates the first press release from the foundation.

“Addiction is far too powerful for anyone to overcome alone. But together, one day at a time, we can beat it.”declared the actor during the show « Q With Tom Power » in 2022, as part of the promotion of his memoirs.

Himself a victim of alcohol and drug addiction

In this book he talks regarding how he started drinking heavily during the first two seasons of Friends, then to take pain pills following a skiing accident in 1996. His addictions led him to at least 15 stays in rehab centers, and brought him close to death.

A long descent into hell from which he was able to recover following having managed to talk regarding it. His wish to help others do the same comes true today. The Chandler Bing singer’s foundation is sponsored and managed by the National Philanthropic Trust, a public charity and leader in donor-advised funds, which has raised more than $49 billion since its inception.

It is possible to make a donation of the amount of your choice on the foundation’s website. For people suffering from addiction, Matthew offers one last piece of advice: “ Don’t keep it a secret. Raise your hand and say you’re hurting. Ask for help. And never leave an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting without knowing when the next meeting is.”.
